Rackspace Technology

Recovery for VMware clouds Rackspace already runs.

The overview

Disaster recovery add-ons for Rackspace-hosted VMware private clouds, using VMware Cloud Director Availability or Zerto, plus Hyper-V replication to Azure.

Scope of this profile

Disaster recovery sold mainly as an add-on to Rackspace’s hosted VMware private clouds (SDDC Business, Enterprise and Flex), using VMware Cloud Director Availability or Zerto. Rackspace also documents Hyper-V replication to Azure. Ask whether DR is offered for workloads that are not hosted by Rackspace.

Workload support

Provider-documented

SDDC Business and Enterprise customers can add DR in two tiers. The initial tier uses VMware Cloud Director Availability for interval-based replication of individual VMs, with RPOs selectable from 1 minute to 24 hours. The premium tier uses Zerto and adds consistency groups and continuous data protection. [1] [2]

VM Replication Enhanced Edition, powered by Zerto, offers local and remote replication of VMware VMs. Rackspace describes RPOs and RTOs “measured in seconds and minutes”; that is a marketing description, not a contract figure. [3]

For Hyper-V, Rackspace documents a cloud replication service that sends VMs to Azure using Azure Site Recovery. It states that this service does not provide the failback capability of traditional disaster recovery. [5]

Recovery locations

Provider-documented

The January 2023 SDDC Flex service description lists DR between Rackspace data centers in Ashburn, VA (IAD3), Elk Grove Village, IL (ORD1), Slough, UK (LON3) and Crawley, UK (LON5). All RPO tiers work within a region; only the 1-hour and 4-hour tiers work across regions. [6]

The RPC-VMware DR add-on pairs two environments in two different Rackspace data centers. The SDDC Business and Enterprise DR pages do not name recovery sites. [4] [1]

For Hyper-V cloud replication, the recovery target is Microsoft Azure. [5]

Testing scope

Provider-documented

Under SDDC Business, Rackspace periodically performs DR and failover testing based on the customer’s DR plan, and fees may apply. The customer supplies the plan, defines RPO, RTO and test frequency, and is responsible for a successful application failover. [7]

For VM Replication, the customer opens a ticket to plan a test. Rackspace performs failover tests, failover and failback on request. The customer completes database and application recovery and validates the VMs. [3]

The VCDA and Zerto tiers include test failover options that do not interrupt production. VCDA documents reversing protection back to the original site after a failover. [2] [1]

Cost details

Provider-documented

The January 2023 SDDC Flex description bills DR per VM per hour plus storage and replication. Target-site VMs are charged only while in use, such as during tests and recovery events. Shorter RPOs carry higher storage charges. [6]

SDDC Business is billed as a monthly recurring fee, and DR testing may carry extra fees. No DR price list is published. [7]

For VM Replication, the initial synchronization can cause bandwidth overage charges. [3]
